| Physical Description: | Weimaraners stand between 23 and 27 inches and weigh between 55-85 pounds, with the female being slightly smaller on average. The Weimaraner is athletic and muscular in appearance with a the tail that is docked to a third of its natural length. The gray coat is short and smooth and may vary in hue from silver to bluish to an almost chocolate color. The eyes of a Weimaraner are usually amber, gray or bluish. There is a long-haired variety of Weimaraner that isn't recognized by the AKC. The long-haired Weimaraner's coat is silky and the tail isn't docked. |
| Breed Origins: | The Weimaraner breed dates bake to the 1200s where it was found in the court of Louis IX of France. The current incarnation of the Weimaraner were developed in Germany for use as gundogs. They were owned exclusively by nobility, so were very prized. The Weimaraner was recognized by the AKC in 1943 and is part of the Sporting Group. |
| Breed Personality: | Weimaraners are protective of their family and can be very territorial. Early socializing is important for Weimaraners to prevent aggression. Still, they can be very standoffish to those outside the family. Weimaraner's are very intelligent and sensitive to stern voices and correction. A recent ranking of dog intelligence placed the Weimaraner at number 18 of excellent working/obedience intelligence. Weimaraners were bred for running, so require frequent walks and exercise. Weimaraners that don't get enough exercise can become difficult to control. If a cat is to be in the home with a Weimaraner, it's a good idea to introduce it while the Weimaraner is still a puppy. Since Weimaraners are primarily a hunting dog, they have the tendency to chase down small animals, including cats. |
| Misc: | Weimaraners are also known as Gray Ghosts because of the their gray coat. The Weimaraner is prone to separation anxiety. |
