| Physical Description: |
The Rottweiler is large breed of dog with muscular and athletic build. Rottweilers typically stand between 22 and 27 inches with the male being larger on average.
The coat of the Rottweiler is short, colored black with rust markings on the cheeks and muzzle, paws and legs. A variation of red color with brown markings is less common.
The tails of Rottweilers are docked as puppies.
The Rottweiler's head is broad and rounded with a well developed muzzle. The ears of the Rottweiler sits forward on the head and are triangular in shape.

| Breed Origins: |
The origin of the Rottweiler traces back to the Roman Empire where they were used as cattle dogs, driving and guarding the livestock for the Roman Legions.
The Rottweiler name is derived from the city of Rottweil in Germany which was part of a Roman travel route. The breed almost disappeared as the need for drover dogs decreased, but in the early 1900s an effort to revive the breed was undertaken in Rottweil.
The AKC officially recognized the Rottweiler as a dog breed in 1935. |

The typical Rottweiler is good-natured, calm and gets along well with other animals and children. Rottweilers tendency is to obedience and loyalty, with an eagerness to please.
A lack of socialization and neglect can make for a very territorial dog. This can be especially true with any guardian breed, like the Rottweiler. Early socialization and obedience training is a necessity for Rottweilers.
While Rottweilers get a bad rap as big ferocious dogs, a properly reared Rottweiler is a loving and affectionate companion that gets along with everyone. |
