| Physical Description: | Pugs are small, heavy bodied dogs that weigh between 14 and 18 lbs. The face of a Pug is one of the most distinctive of any breed. The near absence of a snout gives the face a schmushed up (that's a scientific term) look. The Pug face generally has deep set wrinkles around the snout and on the forehead. The eyes of the pug are wide set and large and expressive. The ears are on the small side and hang in a forward facing direction on the side of head. The tail of the pug is also a distinctive characteristic. While the tail is of medium length, it is curled into a bun shape on top of the hind quarters. |
| Breed Origins: | One of the oldest breeds, the Pug dates back to before 400 BC where they were the pets of Buddhist monks in China. In the sixteenth century, the Pug made it's way to Europe where it was a favorite of royalty. In the seventeenth century Italy, they were dressed like coachmen and sat up front next them. This would set a precedent of dressing Pugs in silly costumes that continues to this day. However, the modern Pug is more likely to be dressed as a bride and groom. |
| Breed Personality: | Pugs are very people oriented, while they are usually friendly with other dogs, the Pug is happiest when in the lap of his or her mom and dad. Pugs are very intelligent and very trainable, though they do have a bit of a stubborn streak. Pugs are charming and playful, responding well to a kind human voice. |
| Misc: | Do to the lack of an elongated snout, Pugs frequently have narrow breathing passages. Mostly this makes the Pug snorty and a heavy breather which can be comical. Unfortunately, the side effect of this is the tendency to overheat in warmer weather. Special attention must be paid to ensure the Pug stays cool, especially in warmer climates. Another health concern for Pugs is their deep facial wrinkles. If not kept clean, they are prone to irritation and infection. When surprised or frightened, the tail of the Pug may uncurl. |
