| Physical Description: | Miniature Schnauzers are obviously smaller than the Standard Schnauzer or the Giant Schnauzer. The normal weight for a Miniature Schnauzer is between 11 and 18 pounds, with the male typically being larger than the female. The coat of the Miniature Schnauzer is much like its larger cousins, with wiry fur. The fur is a salt and pepper color or occasionally all black. While you can sometimes find all white Miniature Schnauzers, they are not considered show quality. However, they are still cute. The fur around the face is usually cut to give the appearance of a beard and mustache. The look is completed with a nice set of eyebrows. The tail of the Miniature Schnauzer is quite short, usually no more than two inches. Often they are docked. |
| Breed Origins: | Like all of the Schnauzers, the Miniature version originated in Germany where it was bred to hunt vermin. The AKC recognized the Miniature Schnauzer as its own breed in 1926. |
| Breed Personality: | The Miniature Schnauzer is intelligent, friendly and easy to train. Visitors to a home with a Miniature Schnauzer will be greeted with much barking until they are convinced you're supposed to be there. For this reason, they are an effective four-legged alarm system (batteries not included). |
| Misc: | There is a current controversy regarding white Miniature Schnauzers. Because Standard Schnauzers do not have a white version, most kennel clubs don't recognize it as an acceptable color. The controversy is whether the white coats are naturally occurring or if it's due to albinism, which is considered a mutation. |
