| Physical Description: | Labrador Retrievers are a fairly large dog breed, with a great variation in size. Typical Labradors weigh between 55-70 lbs, with males generally being larger. Labradors have a kind and happy face with expressive eyes. The muzzle is of medium length and the ears sit relatively far back on the head, hanging down. The coat of the Labrador Retriever is short, shedding twice year and coming in three colors: black, chocolate and yellow. The yellow Labrador Retriever colors can vary greatly, some are nearly white, while others are almost red. |
| Breed Origins: | The Labrador Retriever's roots begin in the Canadian province of Newfoundland where it was bred as a water dog, assisting fishermen and hunters of water fowl. Labrador Retrievers were recognized by the AKC in 1917. |
| Breed Personality: | Known for their easygoing nature, Labrador Retrievers are a poor choice for guard dogs. Rather than barking and intimidating would be intruders, the Labrador Retriever is more likely to coax an unwanted visitor into playing tennis ball. Labrador Retriever's kind and personable nature make them ideal for family pets. They are very gentle with children and will put up with a lot. They are one of the most intelligent breeds and are eager to please, making training relatively easy. Owed primarily to their water dog roots, Labrador Retrievers love to play in water and will retrieve items from pools and lakes almost endlessly. |
| Misc: | Labrador Retrievers are by far the most popular dog breed in the United States and Great Britain. Because of their superior intellect and easy sociability, Labrador Retrievers are a favorite for use as assistance dogs. |
