| Physical Description: | Generally standing 30 or more inches in height, the Great Dane is one of the larger breeds of dog. The weight of the Great Dane is usually between 100-200. A Great Dane named Gibson was recognized as the world's tallest dog, measuring 42 inches. Standing on his hind legs, this dog measured an incredible 7 feet, 1 inch. Sadly his free throw game prevented a career in the NBA. The body of the Great Dane is muscular and well proportioned, with a short, shiny coat. The color of the coat can be harlequin, brindle fawn, black and blue. A variety of merle coat exists, but is not a recognized color. The ears of the Great Dare are often cropped, appearing long and pointed. The eyes of Great Danes are usually black, however the eyes blue coated Danes frequently are lighter. |
| Breed Origins: | The history of the Great Dane isn't clear. Dogs resembling the Great Dane appear in Egyptian art dating back to 3000 B.C. and on Greek coins dating to 36 B.C. Some accounts say the breed was developed in Germany by mixing a Mastiff with an Irish Wolfhound. Others claim the breed was first introduced by the Alans, an Asiatic group, when they invaded Italy and Spain in 707 A.D. In spite of the name, there isn't any indication that the Great Dane originated in Denmark. |
| Breed Personality: | The Great Dane is often called the gentle giant. Getting along well with people, dogs, and other animals, the Great Dane are very affable. In spite of their size, the good natured Great Dane frequently thinks of himself as a lap dog. |
| Misc: | The Great Dane is a favorite of cartoon artists. Famous cartoon Great Danes include Scooby-Doo and Marmaduke. |
