| Physical Description: | Golden Retrievers are sturdy dogs, typically standing between 21-25 inches and weighing between 55 and 75 pounds. The coat of the Golden Retriever is medium length and vary in shades from cream to a golden color. The Golden Retriever's coat is dense and is intended to repel water. |
| Breed Origins: | The Golden Retriever was originally bred into being in Scotland by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks. The Golden Retrieve breed was developed as a gun dog by breeding a yellow colored retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Those offspring were later mixed an Irish Setter, Bloodhound and a St. John's Water Dog.. This sporting dog had been know by several names before finally settling on Golden Retriever. Among the previous names are, Flat Coats - Golden and Retriever (Golden and Yellow). The breed name was officially changed to Golden Retriever in 1920. The Golden Retriever was recognized by the AKC in 1925 and is part of the Sporting Group. |
| Breed Personality: | The Golden Retriever is a friendly dog that gets along well the family and strangers alike. The Golden Retriever's gentle and affable manner make them a great family dog, but those same traits make them poor watch dogs. Golden Retrievers are known for their patience and calm demeanor. They get along well with other dogs and other pets. Golden Retrievers are quick to learn and eager to please, making them very easy to train. The Golden Retriever's intelligence and personality make it a favorite as an assistance dog, often working as a guide for the blind and a companion for other physically challenged individuals. |
| Misc: | The first three dogs ever to achieve the AKC Obedience Champion title were Golden Retrievers. Golden Retrievers are the most popular breed according to the AKC. |
