Doberman Pinscher Information

Find out some basic information about Doberman Pinschers. Most Doberman Pinscher owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about Doberman Pinschers, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:

Doberman Pinschers are medium sized, muscular dogs standing between 24" and 28", with males typically being slightly larger. The weight of the Doberman is between 60 and 100 lbs.

The smooth coat of the Doberman Pinscher comes in four main colors: Black, blue, red and fawn. However, color combinations are very common, with black and rust being the most common.

The idealized appearance of the Doberman Pinscher is one with cropped ears and a short cropped tail. Doberman Pinschers naturally have relaxed ears that hand down the side of the head and have a tail that is fairly long.

Breed Origins: The Doberman Pinscher breed was originated in Germany in the 1890s by a man named Karl Dobermann, who was a tax collector. He bred the Doberman Pinscher specifically as protection of himself as he went around doing the dangerous job of collecting taxes.
Breed Personality:

Doberman Pinschers are often assumed to be aggressive and fierce dogs. While their original purpose was to guard individuals, and they are still used in that roll, the modern Doberman Pinscher is gentle and affectionate, making it a suitable family pet.

Training and obedience is especially important for Doberman Pinschers and other larger dogs. While the modern Doberman is a kinder and gentler breed, they still carry some of the traits that make them good watch dogs. They may exhibit aggression or intimidation towards strangers in their effort to protects its family.

Misc: The Doberman Pinscher has often been used in law enforcement and in the military, however it is now more common to see German Shepherds or even Labrador Retrievers in their former rolls.
