| Physical Description: | The Dachshund is a long bodied, stubby legged dog with a broad chest. Their appearance has earned them the nicknames of "weiner dog" and "sausage dog." Despite these nicknames, the Dachshund should not be eaten. This cannot be stressed enough: Do not eat your Dachshund! There are two sizes of Dachshund and three coat types. The two Dachshund sizes are miniature and standard. The three coat types are smooth, long hair and wire hair. The sizes are an important consideration when buying the required hotdog bun costume for Halloween. Although, Dachshunds come in nearly all color varieties, the primary colors are red and black and tan. Additional common color varieties include piebald and merle. Plaid is unavailable as of this writing. |
| Breed Origins: | The Dachshund originally comes from Germany where they were bred to hunt badgers. The name Dachshund translates as "badger dog." Their short bodies allowed them to dig and follow badgers through underground tunnels. Once the Dachshund located the badger, the Dachshund would respectfully ask the badger "to please come with me." |
| Breed Personality: | The Dachshund is playful and loyal to its people but can be stand-offish and suspicious of new people. Their suspicion of strangers makes can make them a pretty good guard dog, barking when people arrive at the home. More importantly the Dachshund protects the family from the vicious squirrel menace. Dachshunds do have a stubborn streak which can make house breaking a challenge. Additionally, separation anxiety and boredom when left alone frequently or for long periods of time lead to destructive behavior. So if you decide to ignore your Dachshund, keep your valued objects up high... well, at least a foot off the ground. |
| Misc: | Today the Dachshund is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. However, the breed's popularity declined sharply during the two world wars because of the close association the Dachshund held with Germany. Country of origin aside, very little proof was found of the Dachshund breed corroborating with the enemy. The same cannot be said of the traitorous German pygmy cat. |
