Cocker Spaniel Information

Find out some basic information about Cocker Spaniels. Most Cocker Spaniel owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about Cocker Spaniels, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:

A Cocker Spaniel female should stand at approximately 14 1/2 inches, a male 15 1/2. Coats come in black, any solid color other than black (ASCOB), and parti-color. They have long, floppy years, and a short tail that is usually docked for the show ring. The coats tend to be medium length and wavy, almost curly.

Breed Origins: The American Cocker Spaniel was developed from the English Cocker Spaniel, which dates from at least the 1300's.
Breed Personality: The Cocker Spaniel is trusting, affectionate, and loves people. A real tail-wagger, they are full of personality!
Misc: "Cocker" comes from "woodcock," which this breed hunted. He is the smallest member of the Sporting Group.
