| Physical Description: | The Chihuahua is the smallest recognized dog breed, usually weighing under 10 pounds, some actually weigh less than two pounds. Not surprisingly, it is classified in the Toy Group. Chihuahuas have large expressive eyes and large erect ears sitting low on the side of their heads. There are two coat types of the Chihuahua. The long coat and the smooth coat. The long coat variety being less prone to shedding. Chihuahuas can be found in nearly any color or color combination. Any description of a Chihuahua would be incomplete without using the phrase, "Chihuahuas are cute!" Well, they are, so, there you go. |
| Breed Origins: | The Chihuahua originated in Mexico and may date back to before the Mayan civilization in one form or another. The first traceable evidence dates back to the 2nd century BC. The modern Chihuahua can be traced back to Chihuahua, a Mexican State bordering the United States. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1904. Over time the Chihuahua breed has become increasingly smaller and will soon be in danger of being mistaken for hamsters. |
| Breed Personality: | Chihuahuas are very affectionate and loving to their human, but can be very territorial and suspicious of anybody else. Chihuahuas frequently bond to just one individual and become very possessive of that individual. Chihuahuas generally do not appreciate the companionship of other dog breeds, preferring another Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is often described as a "nervous" dog and has a reputation for being hyper. The Chihuahua, with proper training can be trained out of these behaviors, but are still not recommend for families with small children. Chihuahuas do have a tendency to bite when he or she feels threatened. |
| Misc: | Chihuahuas get cold easily, so your Chihuahua may require the use of a coat or shirt. This is the perfect excuse to play dress up with your dog. I would be remiss if I didn't suggest dressing your Chihuahua in a motorcycle jacket. That would be stupid-cute! And it would keep the Chihuahua warm. Think about it. |
