| Physical Description: | The Border Collie female is typically about 18-21 inches high, while the male usually stands 19-22 inches. They are a medium-sized breed with a long tail. Their fur ranges for short to longer and fluffier like a Shetland Sheepdog's. The longer-haired variety is known as rough-coated, and the shorter-hairs are smooth-coated. All have an undercoat that holds heat. Although black and white is the most common color combination, there are red, merle, and brown Border Collies. Odd eyes (one blue, one brown) are not uncommon. Some Border Collies have perky, bat-wing ears, while others have small floppy ears. |
| Breed Origins: | Border Collies originated along the Scottish/English border for herding sheep, although they will attempt to herd anything and anyone. They most likely descended from English herding breeds crossed with spaniels. |
| Breed Personality: | The Border Collie is very intelligent and praise-oriented. Border Collies are affectionate toward their humans, but can be suspicious of strangers. They need lots of exercise and activity to stay fit and be happy. |
| Misc: | The word "Collie" means black in some Scottish dialects, but has now come to symbolize herders/shepherds of all colors. The Border Collie was recognized by the AKC in 1995. |
