| Physical Description: | Bloodhounds are a heavy boned breed, typically weighing between 80 to 100 pound, though some some are considerably larger. Most stand at about 25" in height. Bloodhounds are found in three color combinations: red, black and tan, and liver and tan, with the red variety being most closely associated with the breed. The face of the Bloodhound is distinctive, with folds of skin around the forehead, eyes and muzzle. The folds of skin on the Bloodhound helps capture the scent of whatever the Bloodhound is tracking |
| Breed Origins: | Bloodhounds are believed to have originated in france and were first bred as early as 1000 AD as a scent tracker. The bloodhound was recognized by the AKC in 1885. |
| Breed Personality: | The bloodhound is a very gentle and affectionate dog. They tend to get along with other dogs as well as people. Because of it's tracking instinct, the Bloodhound can be a challenge to train. Once it locks on to an interesting scent, it can become very single-minded and difficult to distract from it's pursuit. |
| Misc: | The Bloodhound is the only dog whose testimony is accepted in a court of law. "Woof woof barrooooo!" one Bloodhound is quoted as saying during testimony. Some of the more famous Bloodhounds include: Nick Carter (an odd name for a Bloodhound or any dog) was born in 1900 in Kentucky. Nick Carter was famous for tracking criminals and missing people and is thought of found more than 600 of them. The Hanna-Barbara cartoon character Huckleberry Hound was supposedly a Bloodhound. However, he was blue and the hat he wore wasn't the Sherlock Homes type, so you decide. The FOX television animated series King of the Hill featured Ladybird, a bloodhound that spent most of her time sleeping. |
