|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Physical Description: | There are two sizes of beagle, the 13" beagle and the 16" beagle. Beagles range in weight between 18 and 35lbs. The fur of the beagle is short and comes in a variety of colors, with the traditional tri-color (white, brown and black) being the most common. Other color possibilities are tan, white, orangish, brown, black and combinations of those colors. |
| Breed Origins: | The modern beagle dates to 1830s when it was developed in England for hunting rabbits. However, the breed may date back as far as 2,000 years in one form or another. |
| Breed Personality: | Beagles tend to be carefree, happy dogs that are very good with children. Although they are trainable, they are easily distracted and once they pick up a scent become very single-minded. While this scent drive can make for a frustrating time for the owner, it make the beagle ideally suited for use as detection dogs. |
| Misc: | The ship Charles Darwin sailed on during a three year expedition was the HMS Beagle. The book he wrote chronicling the voyage was called "The Voyage of the Beagle." Much of his observations from this journey contributed to his "Origin of Species." The most famous beagle is probably Snoopy from the Peanuts comic strip.
