Basset Hound Information

Find out some basic information about basset hounds. Most basset hound owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about basset hounds, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:	Basset Hounds have broad chests and thick bodies with short legs. Basset hound ears are long and droopy, sometimes just hovering above the ground. The skin of basset hounds are much looser than on most breeds. The loose skin creates thick wrinkles on the face, giving it that distinctive hang dog look. The coat of the basset hound is fairly short and smooth, coming in any of the traditional hound colors.
Breed Origins:	Basset hounds were originally breed in france for hunting small game. The basset's short stature and extra-sensitive nose made them well suited for that particular job.
Breed Personality:	Sweet and affectionate, basset hounds require limited grooming. However, being a scent hound, a basset hound's nose can lead him into trouble. When an interesting scent is found, it can be hard for a basset hound to ignore, making a short trip around the block into an exorcise in tracking.
Misc:	Famous basset hounds include, Rosebud (a bassalope) from the daily comic strip Bloom County by Berke Breathed and Flash from the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard.
