American Foxhound Information

Find out some basic information about American Foxhounds. Most American Foxhound owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about American Foxhounds, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:	Males should stand 22-25", females 21-24." The American Foxhound was bred to be taller and faster than the English Foxhound, with a better sense of smell. The American Foxhound has a short coat, long legs and tail, and flat, wide ears that frame the face.
Breed Origins:	The American Foxhound is descended from English Foxhounds brought to the US in the 1600's, whose descendants were said to have been bred with a French Foxhound given to George Washington by Lafayette.
Breed Personality:	Gentle, loving and affectionate with their humans, they are great hunters. Their natural pack tenancies make them good in multi-dog households.
Misc:	First recognized by the AKC in 1912. The American Foxhound Club resigned from the AKC in the early 1990's when they were more interested in hunting than conformation. The current American Foxhound Club re-applied to the AKC in 1995, and the breed was recognized in 1997.
