Akita Information

Find out some basic information about akitas. Most akita owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about akitas, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:

The Akita sheds his short, stiff coat twice a year. Males stand 26-28" high, and females 24-26".

Breed Origins: The Akita originated on the island of Honshu, in the Akita region of Japan, and variously used as a guard dog, hunter, and sled dog.
Breed Personality: Akitas have a loyal, protective personality, and are very affectionate towards their humans.
Misc: The first Akita was brought to the United States by Helen Keller, after she visited Japan on a speaking tour. The most famous Akita is probably Hachu-Ko, who waited at the train station for years for his human, after the man died after leaving on the train for work. Many statues have been erected to Hachu-Ko. The Akita breed was made a national monument of Japan in 1931, and is considered Japan's national dog.
