Afghan Hound Information

Find out some basic information about Afghan Hounds. Most Afghan Hound owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about Afghan Hounds, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:

The Afghan Hound's long silky coat makes him an elegant companion, but served the practical purpose of being adaptable to the changeable Middle Eastern climate of his origins. The Afghan Hound's distinctive top-knot may be worn straight or 'wild.' He is a sight hound, so his keen gaze and speed make him a good hunter, and was also used as a shepherd. The breed is said to be built along the same lines as successful racehorses. Male Afghan Hounds stand 26-28" high, while female Afghans stand 24-26".

Breed Origins: The Afghan Hound has been traced back to ancient Sinai, where it was used as a hunting dog but is generally associated with the mountains of Afghanistan.
Breed Personality: The Afghan Hound is affectionate and loyal to his people, but also has a spirited side to his personality. An Afghan will chase after anything that catches his keen eye!
Misc:

The Afghan Hound is a breed that will appreciate lots of exercise, especially the opportunity to run off-leash.

Additionally, Afghan Hounds enjoy being filmed from behind as they ride in convertibles, being mistaken for women. They find this endlessly entertaining.
