Affenpinscher Information

Find out some basic information about Affenpinschers. Most Affenpinscher owners already know this stuff, but if you're new the breed, this is as good a place to start as any. For comprehensive information about Affenpinschers, check out some the books in the right hand column.

Physical Description:

An Affenpinscher is a small dog that can be found in the Toy group, Affenpinschers weigh between 7 and 9 pouns and rarely exceed in height.

The Affenpinscher has a rough coat that is thicker an longer towards the front of the body, creating a "mane" llke covering over the head and shoulders. The rest of the coat over the lower body down to the hind quarters are shorter and less coarse by comparsion. The overall appearance is a shaggy/wirey haired dog with a monkey like face.

The AKC Stardards has parted with the UK equivalent orgaization that require an all black coat. According to the AKC the Affenpinscher may also allow gray, silver, red, tan and beige.

Breed Origins:

The origin of the Affenpinscher dates back to the 1600s in Germany where the name is derived from "Affe," which means monkey.

The Affenpinscher, like many dogs this size, were believed bred as ratters, with the duty of keeping rats out of stables and grainaries..

Breed Personality:

Affenpinschers are playful and very social, getting along with other pets. Affenpinschers have a natural curiosity and sense of adventure that can lead to naughtiness and a stubborness that is typical of terriers

Affenpinscers are loyal to a fault and affectionate and protective of it's family. The Affenpinscher's stubborness, can make housebreaking difficult and may require firm training.

Affenpinschers to tend to get a feeling of ownership about things, so they can be very protective of it's toys and food. This can be an issue with small children.

Misc:

Affenpinschers are prone to collapsed trachea, so they should be walked with a harness, rather than hooked directly to the collar.

Affenpinschers are great for those looking for a dog that sheds lightly. While all dogs shed, the Affenpinschers shed much less than many other breeds.
